Every September, Samaritan joins the nation in recognizing Hunger Action Month—a time to raise awareness about food insecurity and take real steps toward ending hunger in our community. As kids go back to school and the warmth of summer gives way to fall, thousands of our neighbors face a quieter, invisible struggle: not knowing where their next meal will come from.
But there’s hope. You can help. And it doesn’t have to be complicated.
Why Hunger Action Month Matters
Hunger isn’t just an empty fridge—it’s a child going to bed with a growling stomach, a parent skipping dinner so their kids can eat, a senior citizen making impossible choices between medication and groceries. The face of hunger could be anyone: a coworker, a friend, a classmate, or someone you pass on the street every day.
But together, we can change that story.

Simple, Powerful Ways to Help
1. Host a Food Drive at Work or in Your Community
Organize a food drive with your coworkers, friends, or local group. It’s as easy as placing a collection box in the break room or lobby and letting people know how they can help. Every can or box of food collected is a small act of love that adds up to real change.
2. Donate Non-Perishable Food Items
Drop off canned goods, pasta, rice, peanut butter, and other shelf-stable items at our collection sites. These donations go directly to families who need them most, and every single item makes a difference.
3. Use Our Walmart Registry
Don’t have time to shop? You can still help—right from your phone or computer! Just visit our Walmart Registry and select items to purchase for local families in need. Walmart will deliver them straight to us, making it easier than ever to help fill a pantry and fuel a future.
4. Spread the Word
Not everyone knows how many are struggling with hunger. Share our mission, stories, or this post with your network. Awareness leads to action, and action leads to change.
5. Volunteer Your Time
Giving just a few hours a month to help sort donations, pack food boxes, or deliver meals can have a huge impact. When we all come together, no one has to fight hunger alone.
Why Your Help Means So Much
Every donation, every hour volunteered, every can collected is a light in the darkness for someone who needs hope. It says: You matter. You’re not alone. We see you.
Hunger Action Month is more than a campaign—it’s a chance to make a real, lasting difference. The fight against hunger is big, but so is the power of a caring community. With your help, Samaritan can ensure that fewer families go to bed hungry this fall.
